Team sports have always occupied a significant and influential space in my life.  As a kid, I played hockey and baseball competitively and always felt I took lessons from those experiences that were valuable beyond the sport. As an adult, I have the privilege of coaching my son and believe more than ever that exposing kids to team environments provides them with important building blocks that are critical as they get older, and are inevitably required to work with others, usually in the corporate world.

Here are three lessons I’ve learned both playing and coaching sports that I believe apply to working within a company.

  1. Leadership Matters

For better or worse, teams often take on the personalities of their coaches and their best players. Culture and accountability start from the top and you can usually figure out pretty quickly what values matter to an organization by looking at the way their leadership carries themselves.

  1. Learning Matters

In sports, it doesn’t matter how you start a season, it’s how you finish the season that counts.  There’s no such thing as a perfect team and it is how individuals adapt, learn and grow together than determines how successful they can be.  Championships aren’t won in the pre-season, and just like in sports, it’s the companies that foster a culture of learning and growth that usually come out on top when it matters most.

  1. Sharing Matters

Individual accolades are nice, but nothing feels better than being able to share in the experience of winning with others.  It ends up being less about the end result and more about the journey you took with teammates or colleagues (usually against all odds) that makes winning truly special.

I hope everyone has an opportunity to be a part of a team that grows together, learns together and wins together. It’s truly a feeling unlike any other!
